HOW TO CREATE THE BEST WEDDING DAY GETTING READY MEMORIES (AND PHOTOS)

February 14, 2025

Getting ready on your wedding day is an experience like no other—a whirlwind of excitement, anticipation, and the surreal feeling that the day is finally here. If capturing those feelings is high on your list of priorities, the right environment can make all the difference. One of the most powerful elements to consider? Light.

The psychology of light is fascinating. Natural light doesn’t just create beautiful photos—it shapes the way we feel. Studies show that exposure to natural light boosts serotonin, the “feel-good” hormone, enhancing mood and reducing stress. When you’re in a well-lit space, you naturally feel more at ease, more radiant, and more connected to the moment. And that energy translates directly into your photos.

So, how can you ensure your wedding day getting ready photos are elevated and filled with light and life? Consider these key factors, from a St. Louis wedding photographer to you!!

+ PRIORITIZE NATURAL LIGHT:
Perhaps the most important element in stunning getting ready photos is natural light. A room with large windows and plenty of sunlight creates a soft, flattering glow that enhances skin tones and brings warmth to your images. Sunlit spaces promote relaxation, elevate the mood, and add a timeless quality to your photos that artificial lighting simply can’t replicate.

By focusing on these elements—time management, space selection, aesthetic, and natural light—you can create an atmosphere that feels as good as it looks. Because in the end, the best photos aren’t just about how they appear—they’re about how they make you feel. And light, more than anything, is what brings them to life.

+ CHOOSE A LARGE SPACE:
A large getting-ready space makes all the difference in how comfortable everyone feels. Look for a location that offers ample room for you and your wedding party to move around freely. A spacious environment also allows your photographer to capture a variety of shots without distraction. A clean, neutral space free of clutter enhances the natural beauty of the moment and allows the light to work its magic. If you love classic, bright, and airy photos, opt for a venue with soft-toned walls and minimal distractions.

+ PLAN FOR MORE TIME THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED!!:
One of the most crucial aspects of getting ready photos is having enough time. Work with your planner, photographer, and hair and makeup team to build a timeline that allows for a relaxed, stress-free experience. A calm morning sets the tone for the entire day and allows space for organic, heartfelt moments to unfold. You may think that putting on your wedding dress will only take 5 min – I PROMISE you, from years of experience as a St. Louis wedding photographer, we should be planning for about 30 minutes. It’s a wild wedding phenomenon for a task that typically takes 5 minutes to turn into 30…but ask any tenured photographer, we will all tell you the same thing 😉 Also be sure to talk with your planner and wedding photographer about any “first looks” you’d like to do so they can build time in for you to cry all your happy tears (and have the makeup artist touch up the evidence).

Happy planning!!
